Protein expression - GFAP

High magnification of brain (cerebral cortex) showing expression of GFAP in glaial cells. The dendritic nature of astrocytes are clearly visable.

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) - Marker for astrocytes

GFAP is an intermediate filament protein that is found within non-neural cells of the central nervous system, and predominantly in astrocytes. GFAP primarily functions to provide cellular structure and mechanical support, as well as being an important for the establishment of the blood-brain barrier. Clinically GFAP is used in the diagnostics of brain tumors.
