In this movie, we can visualize some of the finer details in the spleen by using light sheet microscopy. The spleen is the largest organ in the lymphatic system and plays multiple supporting roles in the body.

The spleen consists of both a white pulp which is part of our immune system and a red pulp that filters blood. Old red blood cells are recycled in the spleen, and platelets and white blood cells are stored in the spleen. The 3D technology allows for demonstration of how different cells and structures relate to each other and how our nervous system communicates with our immune system is revealed at a cellular resolution. Meet Dr. Fredrik Ponten discussing the content of the movie and the potential for analyzing events important for interactions between the different components that build up our spleen.
