Parathyroid hormone (PTH) - Marker for the parathyroid gland

The PTH gene encodes for the polypeptide parathyroid hormone, which is exclusively expressed by the parathyroid gland. The function of this protein is to control the balance of electrolytes in the blood, especially to elevate the Ca2 levels by dissolving salts from bone tissue. Parathyroid hormone simultaneously prevents the excretion of Ca2 from the kidneys and also functions in regulation of vitamin D and phosphor levels.
